Tool selection for metal matrix composites (including milling/drilling/turning)

Metal matrix composite (MMC) is a composite material which is made of metal and its alloy as the matrix and artificially combined with one or several metal or non-metal reinforced phases. The reinforcing materials are mostly inorganic non-metals, such as ceramics, carbon, graphite and boron, and metal wires can also be used. Is a new type of composite material difficult to process, how to choose the tool processing metal matrix composite material? See below.
I. Introduction of metal matrix composites

1. Metal matrix composites according to the metal or alloy matrix, can be divided into aluminum matrix composites, magnesium matrix composites, titanium matrix composites, nickel matrix composites, copper matrix composites, high temperature alloy matrix composites, intermetallic compounds and refractory metal matrix composites.

2. Metal matrix composites can be classified into particle reinforced metal matrix composites (such as Al2O3, SiC reinforced light alloy matrix composites), short fiber/whisker reinforced metal matrix composites, long fiber reinforced metal matrix composites, layered composites according to the type of reinforcement.

Second, metal matrix composites processing difficulties

Metal matrix composites are widely used in aerospace, military areas, rail transportation, medical, electronics and other fields, because of its wear resistance, good performance, high toughness, small linear expansion coefficient of thermal conductivity, good conductivity, high impact resistance, high temperature resistant, fine performance characteristics such as high specific strength, at the same time these good qualities are also varying degrees of bring the difficulties in machining of metal matrix composites.

Especially, the abrasive enhancement phase in the metal matrix composites makes them difficult to be cut, and causes serious tool wear. How to choose the tool to make the surface roughness of the metal matrix composites processing smaller, long tool life, has become the main research direction to solve the difficulties in the metal matrix composites processing.

Three, metal matrix composite material processing tool material

Although metal matrix composites can be made into different precision and different forms of parts through a variety of little or no cutting process, but for the workpiece with high precision requirements, cutting is still inevitable. The traditional tool materials, such as high speed steel and hard alloy, can not meet the requirements of the cutting of metal matrix composites, especially the finishing machining, because of the great abrasive properties of the reinforcing phase in the metal matrix composites.

In recent years, the world's industrial developed countries and domestic companies are scrambling to develop new polycrystalline diamond tool materials to solve the machining problems of metal matrix composites.

Metal matrix composite turning tool

Most used in machining of metal matrix composites are the foundation is turning processing, composite processing cutting tool material car relative drilling, milling process is relatively simple in structure, for efficient batch processing, carbide cutting tools is generally selected substrates with PCD material point as a cutting edge machine clip blade, in view of the special metal base composite material artifacts, such as auto parts processing, also need to use a custom non-standard cutting tool, the overall carbide tool or steel cutter with PCD cutting edges, collective this tool has a good impact resistance, bending strength and vibration resistance, and the cutting tool performance is very stable, The surface finish of the composite parts is better after processing.
